Education is POWER, and keeping stories alive is ESSENTIAL. That's why in celebration of #blackhistorymonth we wanted to highlight the history of our people and our culture in Toronto through our "Did You Know" series.
Did you know that in 1926 Joshua Michael Williams, a merchant and importer of Jamaican coffee, and Rachel Adina Stephenson wed at the British Methodist Episcopal Church, a gathering spot for many in the black community? Viewed as one of the more elaborate weddings by members of the local Jamaican colony at the time, The couple celebrated their reception on Queen Street West and honeymooned in Niagara Falls. The British Methodist Episcopal Church on Chestnut St. was a focal point of Toronto’s black community for more than a century, its congregants offering shelter to those fleeing slavery via the Underground Railroad.
